Colorado's Center for Improving Value in Healthcare (CIVHC) examined trends in Subsys prescription practices from 2012-2016 using commercial and Medicaid data from Colorado's All Payer Claims Database (APCD). CIVHC found that the majority of prescriptions for Subsys, a powerful opioid used specifically to manage cancer pain, were filled to individuals without a cancer diagnosis. These prescriptions resulted in $13.6 million dollars of potentially avoidable spending for the state.
